Exposure to Night Light Can Cause Depression

Researchers have found Computer usage at night can Cause Depression

If you stay awake at night and use your computer, iPad, or other electronic device, you could be causing your own depression. The journal Nature explains how our ability to use light throughout the night may actually cause us a great deal of harm. This is especially true in the day of the latest technology where nearly everyone uses electronic devices.  Aberrant light directly impairs mood and learning through melanopsin-expressing neurons.

People who stay up late at night, whether they are working, playing, or even just posting pictures on Facebook, have a higher chance of developing depression and learning problems, and it is not due to just a lack of sleep, but also because of the exposure to bright light at night from lamps, laptops, and even the newly popular iPads.

The daily solar cycle allows organisms to synchronize their circadian rhythms and sleep–wake cycles to the correct temporal niche. Changes in day-length, shift-work, and transmeridian travel lead to mood alterations and cognitive function deficits. Sleep deprivation and circadian disruption underlie mood and cognitive disorders associated with irregular light schedules. Whether irregular light schedules directly affect mood and cognitive functions in the context of normal sleep and circadian rhythms remains unclear.People who stay up late at night, whether they are working, playing, or even just posting pictures on Facebook, have a higher chance of developing depression and learning problems, and it is not due to just a lack of sleep, but also because of the exposure to bright light at night from lamps, laptops, and even the newly popular iPads.

It may be time to put down the gadget or at least give it a curfew.

Good read. Technology may have made our lives easier but it seems to impose great danger to our health too. Thanks for posting.
